Welcome to Huan Labs, our new monthly blog about all things Huan, technology, and our community.

Huan has a growing community made up of hundreds of dogs of all breeds, shapes and sizes.

Huan is on track to cover most of LA!

As more and more people protect their pets by joining Huan, we’re learning some surprising facts about pet ownership, canine (and human) behavior, and yes, the subject of today’s post: Which breeds are the most (or least) popular.

DISCLAIMER: This is in no way a scientific survey. Some owners leave their dogs’ breed out, while others accidentally select the wrong one. Some dogs might be flat out lying about their own breed. We have no way of knowing.

And so, Here are the 5 most popular dog breeds, according to the Huan community:

Breed #5: German Shepherd

German Shepherds are one of the most popular breeds today! They are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep. Since that time however, because of their strength, intelligence, trainability, and obedience, German Shepherds around the world are often the preferred breed for many types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police and military roles, and acting.

Breed #4: Labrador Retriever

The Labrador is one of the most popular breeds of dog in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States.

A favourite disability assistance breed in many countries, Labradors are frequently trained to aid the blind, those who have autism, to act as a therapy dog, or to perform screening and detection work for law enforcement and other official agencies.

Breed #3: Pit bull

Pit bull is the common name for a type of dog descended from bulldogs and terriers. The pit bull type is particularly ambiguous as it encompasses a range of pedigree breeds, informal types and appearances that cannot be reliably identified. Formal breeds often considered to be of the pit bull type include the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Breed #2: Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are the smallest breed recognized by some kennel clubs.

The Chihuahua’s history is convoluted, and many theories surround the origin of the breed. Both folklore and archaeological finds show that the breed has origins in Mexico. The most common theory is that Chihuahua are descended from the Techichi, a companion dog favored by the Toltec civilization in Mexico.

Breed #1: Mixed Breed Dogs!

Ghost is part German Shepherd, Husky and Jindo.

We don’t know where they came from – and we don’t care! They’re our best friends and loyal companions. Mixed breed dogs are healthier, less susceptible to genetic health problems associated with breeding, and as evident by the overwhelming majority within the Huan community, very much liked by all humans.

In fact, we at Huan have three mixed-breed dogs on our executive team!
